Nicodem Govella (Ph.D, Professor)
Public Health Scientist/Medical Entomologist
Prof Govella is an extraordinary independent public health researcher who has made remarkable contributions to the field of vector biology and malaria control. He holds a PhD in Infectious Diseases from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (University of Liverpool) and currently serves as Chief Research Scientist at Ifakara Health Institute. He has over 20 years of experience in infectious diseases research and programme implementation. His work bridges research and implementation. His record includes engagement with national malaria control priorities, policy-relevant surveillance, operational studies, technical leadership, capacity strengthening of early-career scientists, and strategic organizational development. Because of his established scientific leadership, he has received multiple prestigious international awards, including the UKRI-MRC African Research Leaders Award (2019), the International Knowledge Exchange Award from the University of Glasgow (2016), and the Wellcome Trust International Training Fellowship Award (2013).
Prof Govella has secured over a dozen research grants totaling approximately US$30 million, including prestigious internationally competitive grants from the Wellcome Trust and the UKRI-Medical Research Council under the African Research Leaders Award scheme. For example, in 2019, he received the prestigious African Research Leader Award from the UK Medical Research Council, accompanied by £700,000 in funding in recognition of his leadership. This award enabled him to establish the first nationwide interdisciplinary research programme integrating climate science, anthropology, and entomology to understand how these factors influence disease transmission and to predict how climate change affects vector-borne diseases and the effectiveness of control strategies. He has established an extensive network of partner institutions across Africa, Europe, North and South America, and Southeast Asia, while building strong relationships with key global health funders and decision-makers, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust, and the UKRI-Medical Research Council.
Prof Govella serves on several national and international advisory committees. He is a member of the Tanzania National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) Vector Control Technical Working Group, the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Technical Working Group, and the WHO Roll Back Malaria Vector Control Technical Working Group. These groups are responsible for providing policy recommendations on disease vector control tools at both national and global levels.
Prof Govella has also made significant contributions to strengthening IHI's institutional capacity by establishing new partnerships, sustaining existing collaborations, mentoring the next generation of research leaders, and making strategic institutional investments. As Head of the Environmental Health and Ecological Sciences Department—the largest department within IHI—from 2014 to 2022, he spearheaded the acquisition of land and the establishment of research facilities for conducting public health ecological studies and testing malaria vector control products. These state-of-the-art facilities were later accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO) and are now used by WHO partners through IHI to evaluate malaria vector control products from around the world for WHO approval. This unique combination of expertise and facilities has positioned IHI as one of Africa's leading centres for malaria entomology research.
As an Honorary Staff member at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, Prof Govella has also contributed to developing a strategic partnership between IHI and the University of Glasgow. This collaboration has enabled more than 30 early-career IHI scientists to pursue Master's and PhD training at significantly reduced tuition fees.
Prof Govella has served in several key leadership roles at IHI, including Head of the Environmental Health and Ecological Sciences Department, Chair of the Procurement Board, Member of the IHI Institutional Ethics Review Board, and Member of the Senior Management Committee. Through these leadership roles, he has gained extensive experience in personal leadership, people management, and organizational leadership, contributing to the implementation of IHI's strategic priorities.
In addition to his scientific leadership, Prof Govella recently completed a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership (May 2026), jointly offered by the Uongozi Institute (Tanzania) and Aalto University (Finland). The programme strengthened his expertise in ethical leadership, emotional intelligence, strategic communication, strategic planning and execution, human resource management, financial intelligence for executives, and design thinking.
