Strengthening International Research Collaboration

Strengthening International Research Collaboration

The award titled "Strengthening International Research Collaboration; Fostering Equity through Institutional Risk Management," brings together five institutions across three countries — the University of Glasgow (UK), Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute (Tanzania), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Malawi), Malawi University of Science and Technology (Malawi), and Ifakara Health Institute (Tanzania) — to strengthen institutional risk management and promote equity in research partnerships.

Funded by the British Academy, the initiative will run for 24 months from March 1, 2025, to February 28, 2027. While all partners have strong policy frameworks in place, they face common challenges in implementing them, such as underdeveloped reporting processes, unclear communication pathways, and limited staff awareness of compliance responsibilities. These gaps pose significant risks to institutional operations.

The initiative aims to address these issues by building stronger compliance environments, enhancing equity across all partnerships, and strengthening core institutional capacities. By strengthening risk management systems, the initiative seeks to address power imbalances often seen in Global North–South research collaborations and support more equitable, resilient partnerships.
