LEARNING: Inter-facility experience exchange to strengthen newborn care
From October 20 to 24, 2025, the NEST360 program in Tanzania organized an Inter-Facility Learning Session at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi. The session brought together pediatricians, nurses, and doctors from Mloganzila Hospital to observe, share experiences, and learn from KCMC’s neonatal care practices.
Newborn survival is a key national health priority, and this session provided a platform for hospitals to share experiences, identify performance gaps, and discuss strategies to improve care coverage and outcomes. The session aimed to explore how hospitals can collaborate to enhance newborn survival and quality of care, with the objective of fostering peer-to-peer learning, building healthcare worker capacity, and strengthening the use of data for continuous quality improvement.
Participants observed clinical practices, discussed process flows, and reviewed facility data using the NEST-IT dashboard. Learning focused on Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), hypothermia prevention, and jaundice management.
Healthcare workers identified best practices to adapt at Mloganzila Hospital and recognized areas needing improvement, reinforcing the use of data to guide action plans for better neonatal outcomes. To sustain this momentum, KCMC Hospital staff will later visit Mloganzila for a reciprocal learning experience — continuing the cycle of shared growth and collaboration.
The session was led by members of the NEST360 Tanzania team, supported by clinical, data, and biomedical experts, and joined by Prof. Joy Lawn from the NEST360 Global Team.
