On August 25, the Chronic Diseases Clinic of Ifakara (CDCI), part of the Ifakara Health Institute, in collaboration with local government officials and partners, organized an HIV awareness and engagement event that brought together people living with HIV, health partners, and community members from across Ifakara Town Council.

The event, held under the theme “Quality health services are a right of everyone,” was officiated by Mr. Said Majaliwa, Acting Director of Ifakara Town Council. It brought together more than 150 participants, offering education, health services, and community engagement, highlighting the community’s commitment to reducing HIV transmission while supporting those affected.

The CDCI team offered free HIV testing and counseling services, alongside basic health check-ups such as blood pressure, vitals and BMI measurements. Educational sessions on HIV prevention and care were also delivered.

Encouraging progress was shared: the clinic reported a viral suppression rate of 91.3% in 2024, up from 88% in 2023. According to the latest figures, Ifakara Council has 10,268 people living with HIV — 7,217 women, 3,051 men, 524 children, and 1,840 adolescents and youths. The overall incidence rate has dropped from 5.2% in 2023 to 4.1% in 2024, with a target of reaching 2.4% by 2028.

Partners’ support and community empowerment

Other key partners, including EPIC and SHDEPHA, offered additional counseling, treatment, and education, while FOHOW showcased and promoted their products. Beyond health, the event provided a platform for people living with HIV to showcase their entrepreneurial skills through farming, pottery, mat making, and basket weaving — demonstrating their resilience and contributions to the local economy.

Commitment to ending HIV in Tanzania

With events like this, CDCI and the Ifakara Health Institute reaffirm their commitment to advancing HIV care, promoting awareness, and working towards the ultimate goal of ending HIV in Tanzania.
