HAPPENING NOW: Ifakara showcases health innovations at Nane Nane in Morogoro

The Ifakara Health Institute is once again joining stakeholders at this year’s Farmers' Exhibition, taking place at the Julius Nyerere Grounds in Morogoro, Tanzania from August 1 to 9, 2025.
Ifakara has been a key participant in the exhibitions for several years, consistently taking part at the invitation of the Ifakara Town Council. The institute uses this platform to showcase how science and research can contribute to healthier communities and a more resilient agricultural ecosystem.
About Nane Nane
Farmers’ Day, known locally as "Nane Nane", is celebrated annually on August 8 to recognize the vital role of farmers in contributing to Tanzania’s economy through the agricultural sector. Leading up to this national day, a week-long agricultural exhibition takes place, bringing together farmers, researchers, government institutions, private sector players, and development partners.
The event serves as a dynamic platform to showcase innovations, share knowledge, and promote best practices in agriculture. Importantly, the exhibition also fosters cross-sector collaboration, particularly at the intersection of agriculture and public health – an area where Ifakara Health Institute offers deep expertise and leadership.
Theme: Promoting Leadership for Sustainable Development
This year’s national theme, “Visionary Leadership for a Resilient Future: Advancing Sustainability of Agricultural Ecosystems,” emphasizes the need for leadership that promotes sustainability across sectors—something Ifakara supports through its work in public health and community-based research.
Daily showcases from Ifakara team
A team from Ifakara, including scientists, clinicians, and communication professionals, engage the public through a variety of activities, such as interactive exhibitions, health education, and free screening services. These include malaria testing, HIV counseling and testing, and hypertension screening.
“Each year at Nane Nane, we bridge the gap between science and the people. This year is no different—we’re here to inform, engage, and offer health services that matter,” said Faraji Abilahi, Ifakara’s Community Engagement Coordinator, who is leading this year’s delegation.
Throughout the week, Ifakara’s exhibition will feature thematic showcases from key programs and units, including the Chronic Diseases Clinic of Ifakara (CDCI), the Heart and Lung Clinic, Laboratory unit, and Environmental Health and Ecological Science (EHES) department, providing an in-depth look into Ifakara’s contribution to health research and delivery.
Aligning with Ifakara’s mission for better health
Ifakara’s participation at Nane Nane underscores its commitment to better health for all, in line with its mission to improve health and well-being through research, training, and service. As the country heads toward general elections later this year, the event's theme also underlines the importance of choosing leaders who will champion health, agriculture, and sustainability.
