TRAINING: Regional workshop strengthens maternal, child health financing expertise

From June 2-6, 2025, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), the Global Financing Facility (GFF), the Countdown to 2030 initiative, and the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) co-hosted a five-day workshop focused on analyzing Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (RMNCH) financing.
The program gathered government officials, mainly from the Ministries of Health, from six sub-Saharan African nations: Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Its core objective was to enhance their technical skills in utilizing health financing data to improve national RMNCH planning and decision-making.
Dr. Peter Binyaruka, a Senior Health Economist at Ifakara Health Institute, was a lead facilitator. He guided participants through financing data analysis.
The workshop also fostered cross-country learning, allowing participants to exchange insights and challenges concerning financing mechanisms and health system strengthening. Ultimately, the organizers anticipate that the skills gained will lead to more evidence-based policies and improved accountability in how health resources are used.
