The Ifakara Health Institute proudly celebrates Dr. Kaushik Ramaiya, a distinguished member of our Scientific Advisory Committee, for his election as the East Africa NCD Alliance President.
About the East Africa NCD Alliance
The East Africa NCD Alliance Initiative brings together national NCD alliances from Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, and Rwanda. It stands as a pioneering model of regional cooperation, fostering collaboration across countries with varying income levels.
Its core mission is to influence national governments to prioritize non-communicable diseases by increasing political commitment and resources, while also strengthening the operational capacity of NCD alliances across East Africa.
About Dr. Ramaiya
Dr. Ramaiya is a member of Ifakara’s Scientific Advisory Committee and serves in various influential roles within the global health community. He is a board member of the World Diabetes Foundation and holds the position of Honorary General Secretary for both the Tanzania Diabetes Association (TDA) and the Tanzania NCD Alliance (TANCDA). Recently elected as the President-Elect of the East Africa NCD Alliance (EANCDA), he also contributes as a member of the Board of the Global NCD Alliance.
In his professional capacity, Dr. Ramaiya is the CEO and Consultant Physician at Shree Hindu Mandal Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. His work extends across diverse research areas, including programs focused on children with Type 1 diabetes, cardiovascular complications related to antiretroviral drugs in HIV/AIDS patients, and the interaction between diabetes and tuberculosis. Notably, he collaborates with the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Muhimbili and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) on the MOCCA Study, which integrates communicable diseases with NCD care models. He is also actively involved in the META Trial, which explores metformin intervention in HIV patients with impaired glucose tolerance.
Furthermore, Dr. Ramaiya and his team at the Tanzania Diabetes Association are implementing a comprehensive National NCD Program. This initiative emphasizes NCD prevention, curative services at the primary care level, training, policy development, and operational research.
The Ifakara Health Institute is immensely proud to have Dr. Ramaiya as part of our family. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to him on this remarkable honor and look forward to his continued contributions to the fight against NCDs in Tanzania, East Africa, and globally.
