LAUNCH: Smart drone technology initiative to end malaria in Zanzibar
On 12 May 2026, the Zanzibar Ministry of Health, through the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Programme (ZAMEP), together with the World Health Organization (WHO), Japan’s SORA Technology, and the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), officially launched the Smart Drone Technology for a Malaria-Free Future in Zanzibar initiative in Unguja, Zanzibar.
This groundbreaking initiative by the Government of Japan, uses AI-powered drones to strengthen malaria elimination efforts by improving the identification and targeting of mosquito breeding sites. The integration of drone and AI technology presents a unique opportunity to enhance surveillance and management of breeding habitats, particularly in hard-to-reach areas where conventional methods can be challenging.
Through this collaboration, partners aim to strengthen data-driven decision-making, improve larval source management, and support more targeted malaria control interventions.
Led by Ifakara scientists Dr. Nicodem Govella and Dr. Tegemeo Gavana, Ifakara is honoured to contribute its expertise in vector control, entomological surveillance, and operational research to support Zanzibar’s journey towards malaria elimination.
