COMMEMORATION: World Tuberculosis Day 2026
This World Tuberculosis Day, the Ifakara Health Institute joins the global community in reaffirming a shared commitment to end tuberculosis once and for all. Under this year’s theme, “Yes! We Can End TB! Led by Countries! Powered by People!”, we recognize that sustainable progress depends on strong national leadership, community engagement, and continued investment in science and innovation.
We are proud to take part in the official World TB Day commemorations at Mbagala Zakhem Grounds in Dar es Salaam, standing alongside the Government of Tanzania, partners, and communities in raising awareness and advancing action against TB.
Tanzania’s remarkable progress in TB fight
Under the guidance of the National TB and Leprosy Program within the Ministry of Health, Tanzania has made remarkable progress in the fight against TB. According to the WHO Global TB Report 2024, TB incidence has declined by 40%—from 306 per 100,000 people in 2015 to 183 in 2023—while TB-related deaths have fallen by 68%.
Treatment success rates have reached 96%, surpassing global targets. These achievements demonstrate the power of strong partnerships, evidence-based interventions, and community engagement.
Ifakara impact in TB research, care
Our work in TB began in the early 2010s, with major milestones highlighted in 2016, including the establishment of specialized clinics in Dar es Salaam and contributions to WHO guidelines on TB diagnostics. Today, our research continues to translate into real health impact.
We are advancing new tools in TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment—including vaccine trials, shorter treatment regimens, and cutting-edge technologies to better understand how TB spreads in our communities.
Yet, the burden of TB remains significant. Ending TB requires sustained commitment, bold leadership, and collective action. Countries must continue to lead with strong health systems and equitable access to services, while people—health workers, researchers, communities, and partners—remain at the heart of this effort.
