From February 23 to March 6, 2026, Ifakara Health Institute, in collaboration with St. Francis Referral Hospital, Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), and University Hospital Basel, conducted a two-week Critical Care Training in Ifakara. The training aimed to strengthen the knowledge and practical skills of clinicians and health workers working in critical care settings.

Held at St. Francis Referral Hospital, the course brought together 40 healthcare professionals eager to enhance their expertise in managing critically ill patients.

The primary goal of the training was to improve the quality of care provided to patients with life-threatening conditions in resource-limited settings, where quick decision-making and strong practical skills are essential.

Participants took part in a range of learning activities, including interactive lectures, case-based discussions, and hands-on practical sessions. These sessions were designed to build participants’ confidence and competence in managing complex and life-threatening conditions commonly encountered in hospitals.

The training was facilitated by experts from Ifakara Health Institute, including PD Dr. Martin Rohacek, Prof. Dr. Maja Weisser, and Dr. Andrew Katende. They worked alongside an international team from University Hospital Basel, including Dr. Selina Wettstein, Sarah Funk, and Fabian Fiechter.

This course reflects the continued commitment of Ifakara Health Institute and its partners to strengthen health systems and improve the quality of care for critically ill patients in Tanzania.
