#MALARIADAY2022: Ifakara teams showcase malaria research at national event in Dodoma

As one of the leading malaria research institutes globally, Ifakara has teams of scientists and supporting staff at Chinangali Park in Dodoma – where this year’s commemorations are observed at the national level.

The teams are: District Entomologist Unit from Ifakara and Mathematical Modelling and Data Science from Dar es Salaam. The event host is the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) under the Ministry of Health. Ummy Mwalimu, the Minister for Health, graced the event.

Mwalimu had visited the Ifakara and partners’ booth to witness and hear malaria research efforts on display there before she proceeded to officially open the commemorations.

The event was attended by various stakeholders particulalry those with interest in malaria control such as the WHO, African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), A to Z Textile Mills Ltd., Global Fund, Switzerland Embassy, and USAID/PMI. Among the key figures who visited the Ifakara and partners' booth are: The Ambassador of Switzerland to Tanzania, Dr. Didier Chassot, and Dodoma City Mayor, Prof. Davis Mwamfupe.

Speaking ahead of the event, Ifakara scientist from the Environmental Health and Ecological Sciences Department, Dr. Yeromin Mlacha, said, "Achieving Zero Malaria is possible and has to start within our homes. As a country, we still have a long way ahead in the fight to end malaria but with the government support of initiatives and efforts on malaria control, Tanzania can eliminate malaria disease."

World Malaria Day is an international observance commemorated every year on April 25 and recognizes global efforts to control malaria.

The global theme of World Malaria Day 2022 is "Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives" with the WHO calling for investments and innovation that bring new vector control approaches, diagnostics, antimalarial medicines and other tools to speed the pace of progress against malaria.
