As part of the Ifakara Health Institute’s 70 Years of Impact celebrations, Ifakara will participate in the upcoming masterclass addressed “Towards a Rabies-Free Africa: Lessons from the Field and the Road Ahead” on 28 September, from 15:00–16:00 EAT, bringing Tanzania’s experience in rabies prevention and control into a wider continental conversation on the path towards rabies elimination.

The masterclass will bring together experts from the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), and the African Union – Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) to examine lessons from the field and approaches for advancing rabies elimination across Africa.

Representing IHI, Kennedy Lushasi and Christian Tetteh will share a field example from Tanzania, focusing on rabies prevention in humans through post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) provision and community engagement.

The session will also feature André Coetzer, Chief Executive Officer of GARC, providing an overview of the Zero by 30 goal and the role of GARC; Monique Lechenne of Swiss TPH, sharing lessons from mass dog vaccination in Chad; and Elynn Njeri of AU-IBAR, discussing approaches to planning for continent-wide rabies elimination through dog vaccination.

The masterclass forms part of IHI’s 70 Years of Impact programme, marking seven decades of research and contribution to health in Tanzania and beyond.
