Research Portfolio

IHI has a rich and diverse research portfolio that covers important health challenges, including HIV/AIDS, TB, maternal & neonatal health and health systems. The output of the activities has resulted into new knowledge and public health policies being developed. Malaria continues to be a major area of focus in research, covering the full spectrum from basic science, through efficacy and effectiveness studies, to policy implementation and health system monitoring. The ITN research within IHI exemplifies the spectrum of work being undertaken and the comprehensive approach to finding health solutions “value chain”.


Research Capability

IHI has accumulated vast experience in the field of malaria research. It has a whole range of expertise, including entomology, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, clinical sciences and epidemiology. In the field of health service delivery, IHI has the necessary expertise in economics and health systems programme monitoring. Health demographic surveillance system helps IHI to inform policy planning and action at district, national and international levels.
  


Research Products

The aim of IHI research activities is to move from basic science and discovery to policy and action. Research products include clinical trials of new candidate drugs and vaccines to combat malaria; testing implementing and monitoring new strategies for maternal and newborn health; studying fairness and equity in health sector financing and assessing strategies to improve health care access for vulnerable groups. Exploring new approaches to strengthen health information system is another key research product.
 






Institutional Review Board
IRB is a committee designated to approve, monitor, and review biomedical and behavioral research involving humans with the aim to protect the rights and welfare of the research subjects. The IHI Institutional Review Board performs critical oversight functions for research conducted on human subjects that are scientific, ethical, and regulatory.
