Treatment outcomes for non-malarial febrile illness in children aged 6-59 months

Full Title Treatment outcomes for non-malarial febrile illness in children aged 6-59 months in areas of perennial malaria transmission.

 Short Title

 Project Leader Thomas Lyimo

Description In the past, most malaria control programs recommended treatment of all febrile children under five with first line antimalarial drugs without testing even where parasitological diagnosis is available. Febrile children were purposely over treated with antimalaria drugs in order to prevent the development of severe malaria. But, have such policies inadvertently resulted in under treatment of other causes of non-malaria fever? Little is known about the epidemiology of other common treatable causes of non-malaria fevers in areas of intense malaria transmission. In this study we would like to evaluate the identifiable causes of treatable fever among malaria negative children presenting to outpatient health clinics in Miono, Bagamoto district using a variety of clinical, microbiological and serologic methods. Findings will help guide the development of clinical algorithms for the treatment of non-malarial febrile illness in children.
