Full Title Assessment of Renal Dysfunction in the Catchment Area of the
Bagamoyo District Hospital by simple clinical laboratory tests.

 Short Title

 Project Leader Michael Mayr

Description In sub-Saharan Africa chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an increasing challenge.  High rates of communicable and infectious diseases and the rise in people suffering from diabetes and hypertension explain the observed and further expected increase of CKD.  In contrast to high-income countries, CDK affects typically young adults and progresses unrecognised to end stage renal disease.  Many people die already on the way to end stage renal disease (ESRD) or shortly thereafter.  Due to the lack of resources, renal replacement therapy or kidney transplantation is no realistic option for most of them.  Therefore, early detection and prevention of renal disorders is the only realistic strategy to prevent an aggravation of the existing health and economic crisis and to encourage equity in health care. Screening and prevention programs have to be as simple as possible and should be based on the knowledge of epidemiologic data considering the regional and local socioeconomic and cultural background.

The aim of the project is the assessment of the rate and severity of renal disorders in the catchment area of the Bagamoyo District Hospital (BDH) by simple clinical and laboratory data.  In patients who attend the BDH, age, sex, blood pressure, heart rate, body weight and height and urine for dipstick (protein) and microscopic analysis and serum creatinine levels will be recorded.  These simple tests will allow the detection and quantification of renal disorders.  The generation of these data could provide important information to develop screening strategies which help to realize practicable and affordable prevention programs for CKD in low-income regions.
