In Tanzania, every 26 April is Union Day to commemorate the creation of the United Republic of Tanzania through the union of two formerly sovereign States, namely the Republic of Tanganyika and the People’s Republic of Zanzibar. 

The special political and economic needs after the end of colonialism inspired the leaders of those two countries, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere and Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume to establish the United Republic of Tanzania on 26th April 1964.

Today the Ifakara Health Institute wishes all the people of the United Republic of Tanzania a happy Union Day.
