  Introduction
  Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), formerly IHRDC, is an autonomous, non-profit, district-based health research and resource Institute. The headquarters is located in Ifakara town in Kilombero district, Morogoro Region. The Institute has other office facilities in Dar Es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Rufiji, Mtwara and Kigoma. With a long history going nearly 50 years back as a former Swiss Tropical Institute Field Laboratory, IHI was registered as a Tanzanian Trust in 1996 under the leadership of the Board of Trustees chaired by Ministry of Health. Other members of the Board include National Institute for Medical Research, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Swiss Tropical Institute, Commission for Science and Technology, Regional Medical Officer for Morogoro, Managing Trustee of African Malaria Intervention Network, Muhimbili University Collage of Health Sciences, Economic and Social Research Foundation, INDEPTH, Representative of Regional Administration and Local Government.
   
  Mission
    The mission statement of IHI is to develop and sustain a district-based
health research and resource centre capable of generating new knowledge and
relevant information for public health policy and actions.

IHI is committed to adhere to the concept of Essential National Health
Research (ENHR). The aim is to achieve equity in health and development.
Basic tenets and core values of the centre are to respect human dignity,
equity, scientific excellence, partnership, transparency and accountability.
The Institute aims at providing affordable solutions for national health
problems, advising resource allocations leading to maximum health gain and
supporting Primary Health Care implementation within the context of a
changing healthcare sector
    Objectives
    In contributing to the National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty
(NSGRP) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), IHI pursues the
following objectives:
  1. To develop and evaluate health system interventions to improve the coverage, quality, equity and efficiency and effectiveness
  2. To evaluate interventions against diseases of public health importance
  3. To understand health determinants of the leading public health problems
  4. To monitor and evaluate the impact of national and global initiatives in improving population health
  5. To promote evidence-based policy formulation and translate research results into public health action
  6. To strengthen human resource capacity through executing joint training programmes with universities
  7. To strengthen institutional capacity to ensure sustainability
